The Termination Of Procrastination

Lately my mind has been reeling with the events that have taken over my life and the novel which has…well, taken a strange turn. Writing has taken a comfy spot in my daily schedule along with my eventual move to Oregon, which has left me busy with days of planning, working for extra cash, but blogging unfortunately–has not. I’ve bored myself to start something that will hopefully reignite my creativity and motivation to finish what I started long ago.

Behold!

30 Day Challenge

The WordPress 30 Day Challenge!

For an entire month I shall post a post a day and (heaven willing) in succession. Some of the items on the list are obviously meant for girls (and it’s crossed my mind occasionally that this is only meant for girls), but who says I can’t mix it up. After all, it’s the dedication to write that counts regardless of the questions presented.

To start, I’ll list off the Five Ways to Win My Heart.

  1. Say That I’ll be Your Only– There’s nothing quite like dedication in relationships, I see it to be a true sign of love as I would never cheat on any girl and I expect them to do the same for me. I don’t see it as constraining either; if you want to be with me, then say it. If you don’t, then you’re wasting my time. It seems harsh, but I never look to be someone’s first, only their last.
  2. Show Me You’re Not Afraid to Love Me– I agree that PDA’s are the one of the best ways to show that you’re comfortable being with me. Kissing in a busy park, holding my hand across the restaurant table, giving complements in a crowded subway; all of these and more will acknowledge that you love me unconditionally and want to show that to the world.
  3. Have a Strong Ambition– If you have a dream to become anything great and have the determination to achieve it that shows me that you have a vision of your life ahead, something that I see as attractive.  Knowing that if we have a life together, we can help each other in sharing that outcome.
  4.  Mean Every Good Thing You Say to Me– Be honest. That’s as straightforward as I can get, even if you are too honest, just don’t lie. If you say that you love me, find that it comes from your heart and not a way to get into my pants or use me for any reason.
  5. Make Sacrifices– I’m not asking for the world, but only for small compensations that let me know that you really want me and are worth a spot in my life.

The list could go on further, but I figured these are the most important when it comes to this touchy of a subject. So that’s that for day one, let’s see what happens for day two.

Into The Past: More Lost Files

Long ago I wrote a short passage that helped create the vast universe that became the Bion book series (which you may or may not know). It dealt with the story of Alma, a young man who was left for dead and taken in by a society made up of refugees called The Wicked. He must then learn of the ultimate truth of the war when he turns into the very thing that is feared against.

It can be read here: The Wicked

It may be short (If you consider 5,600 words short…), but it will eventually be updated sooner or later after I get more written in the first book of the series. For now, enjoy a short excerpt.

The crossing of our fingers was insignificant to our hopes and without warning a deafening blast shook the structure, prompting a group of solders to dash into the conflict. I heaved an Arch Shield onto my back and followed the rest. Not even three seconds of being exposed and bolts of plasma that flew by seared my skin, I paused to drive the Arch Shield into the ground and activate it. These were one of the most valuable devices that we had in our possession as it provided transportable cover in any situation, it was created with the same material as Interplanetary Transport Cruisers–a electromagnetically charged metal that generated a plasma window–absorbing any blasts it’s hit with.
This was far from my first time in battle and I was far from what anyone would call a hardened solder, but I knew how to fight which I saw to be sufficient. Jumping from cover to cover , small bursts of plasma ejected from my firearm and happened to land on a few Technion units within my sight. Kirk noticed my progress and to my judgement seemed impressed, until he bestowed an expression that I interpreted as his way of saying that he wasn’t impressed. He then continued to step out of cover and pull out a sword, running toward the barrage of Technions. A bright blue glow emitted along the center of the blade before slicing into the mass of machines.
I recognized it as an Avian-class Jet Blade, a weapon that was only issued to the highest and most honorable fighter pilots in the Avios Air Force. Clearly there was more to Kirk’s past than anyone knew and he was keeping it a secret. In moments the Technions at our stationed area had either retreated or eaten plasma, orders were given afterwards to help flank another group who was attempting to break into the shelter. A few grenades were thrown into the crowd which engulfed almost half of their numbers. However it did little to decrease their strength and the remaining machines split formations and shot at our troop from all sides.

Why I Wasn’t “Popular” In High School

Everyone wants it, the popularity that makes others turn their heads toward your radiating ego as you strut through the halls to get that favorite seat in Home Ec. class. I was one of those and my partial reasoning in joining the 7th Grade Football team was that one desire.

I was a dweeb, a full-blown nerd who enjoyed art and sciences in my elementary years, only to become more so when the transitioning of High School came into perspective. I was known as the “Crazy Lunitic Class Clown”, always trolling teachers and students, causing disruptions in the lunch room, and ultimately…getting sent to the principal and suspended more times than any parent could bear. (To this day, I’m not absolutely sure how I made it through…)

Then BAM–puberty, and I matured into a different being in the years after.

By the time I was in High School, I still had some questionable behavioral antics, but those qualities sparked something within my group of friends. I became what was known as “cool”. I was quiet and whenever something was said it was either witty and funny or outrageously random, giving birth to my most infamous nicknames. I realized that I didn’t want to be popular, I didn’t want the girls to be crawling all over me, or to be the one who was always in the center spotlight. I was already the one who my friends wanted to be around all the time, the one being invited to crazy parties (that wouldn’t attract law enforcement officials…), and no one really hated me…from what I know.

I could still be part of all the nerdy clubs, be a complete science and computer geek, and watch old Spongebob Squarepants episodes without judgement; that was the group I was a part of and to this day people still see me the same, if not more. The cool guy, popular within my own boundaries and not the world’s. Now I’m very much the same, doing what I do best.

I’d say I’m ready for college, which I won’t try to compete in the popularity contests, but there’s a lot I don’t know about that environment.  It could come unexpected and before I know it, I could be renown within city limits.
After all who would care, we’re in it for the education…right?

In Memorium: A Bacon’s Tale

Many of you may not be aware of the recent tragedy of the Bacon community when a truck driver transporting 40,000 pounds of our beloved ambrosia crashed on the highway. The Bacon was celebrating it’s third day of emerging into this world when the semi hit the median, spilling him and all of his brethren onto the pavement.

They were killed on impact.

Rest in Peace

The Bacon was a fun, family loving strip, always ready to help a friend in need. With the dreams of someday starring in his own reality show he participated in several videos within his time of development, steadily climbing the ladder of fame.  He was loved by many and shall be missed by all donuts, skillet, sandwiches, Wendy’s, and unorthodox platters. The nation shall grieve for the loss and will always remember this day. The rest of the numbers shall be forever be etched in remembrance by a memorial being built at supermarkets everywhere.

The Bacon is in a better place now.

Halo 4: The Awakening of a Hero

When the news first exclaimed of Halo 4, the entire world watched in awe. The continuation of Master Chief and the vast universe set centuries ahead of our time, but also hundreds of thousands of years before captivated our intrigue and skepticism. (Explained here.)
The information concerning plot, gameplay, features, perks, and audio between its reveal and now has overwhelmed the gaming world and Halo fanatics such as myself.

The story we know so far of the Reclaimer Trilogy is Master Chief awakening from Cryo-Sleep to find the floating half of Forward Unto Dawn being pulled into a titanic metal sphere with Forerunner glyphs strown across the surface. Later on the shield world is revealed to be inhabited by Prometheans, a forerunner species led by none other by The Didact (in which I believe is inhabiting that metal, glowing sphere we see in the campaign trailer).
Cortana, who is steadily becoming rampant due to her diminishing life-span, has a greater role in this trilogy than the last and from leaked (and speculated causes) may become the very thing that makes or breaks Master Chief.

The story concerning his armor change is also vaguely explained as Cortana crafting it while the spartan was sleeping due to reasons beyond our temporary comprehension. So far it looks good, but aesthetics are not enough in such a story-driven atmosphere.

Master Chief: Ready for Action

Master Chief: Ready for Action

Additional info for supporting characters will come in the form of a live-action miniseries called Forward Unto Dawn, that will explain Thomas Lasky’s story that will tie directly to Halo 4’s plot. From the official website:

“Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” tells an exciting story of heroism and sacrifice on a scale never before seen in the “Halo” universe, taking fans back to the beginning of the human and Covenant war and leading into the events of “Halo 4.” Set against the backdrop of a United Nations Space Command (UNSC) military academy, a group of highborn cadets are training to be the next generation of soldiers in the UNSC’s ongoing war with insurrectionists in the outer colonial planets. Among these cadets, Thomas Lasky struggles with his doubts about this war, and with the burden of expectations he may not be able to carry. As Lasky comes to terms with his potential as a military leader, the terrifying alien alliance known as the Covenant arrives and turns his world upside down. Inspired by the Master Chief, he must decide what it means to be a hero.”

The story so far is only scratching the surface of what we’ll see on November 6th. A lot of people are speculating that the Forerunner planet Requiem is actually Onyx, the planet composed entirely of inactive Sentinels. The only reason in that conclusion is the fact Dr. Cathrine Halsey has a part in the investigation of Requiem. As stated in The Thursday War, Requiem was the final resting place of The Didact they claim as a living God and “must not be awoken”, surrounding himself in ancient weapons known as Promethians.
(Promethians as we know were advanced AI, but according to Kiki Wolfkill, they are nothing less than living organic matter.) It also reveals a weapon catche on Onyx that turns the tide of the war between the Humans and Sangheili, further proving Dr. Halsey’s role in the new trilogy.

Now not to say much about the ending, multiple reports have released that the climatic battle between the UNSC and the Didact fail to shed light on a tie into Halo 5. 343i has quite the plate to devour (bad analogy alert) when it comes to surprizing us with the next installment; the gracious donations of new features leaves it looking rather…dry.

343 Industries has surprized us with a lot, perhaps they will do the same again 3 years from now.

Internet Friends: Chapter 3

The creaky floorboards of the old dilapidated house threw dust into the stagnant air with each step AJ and Kathy took. Nothing had changed since the last visit there and to AJ that was good news considering the situation him and his girlfriend were now a part of. They anticipated the worst as they ventured back into the living room, peering into the hole above the secret dungeon. The makeshift staircase they crafted from stacking old computer towers remained intact and looked sturdy enough to handle the descent.
“Okay, I’ll go first to make sure nothing is down there.” AJ said with slight trepidation.
“Be carefull babe.”
AJ placed a foot on the top of the towers, shaking it to test the stability. “Good.” He said to himself as he stepped down. The darkness of the sprawling space before him installed a sense of anxiety, unaware of any hidden presence. He could feel something–someone, but regarded the feeling as paranoia. AJ reassured Kathy of the safety and called for her to follow.
It was darker than Kathy remembered, prompting her to search for AJ’s hand. They exposed each dark corner and nook by walking around with the lit camera light of their phones. Finding nothing, they proceeded to launch the computer systems.
“We need to find more information on whatever the hell is going on here, I hate surprises.”
“I know you don’t, but this stuff takes a while. As soon as it’s up we’ll search for files related to this…Peter Lancing.” Kathy said as she raised the dusty armrests higher for comfort.
“That’s his name; Peter?”
“Yes. 19 years of age–well, was.” Kathy answered with the roll of an eye. “He was an anonymous hacker for this Interweb Reformery, however I’ll have to get more than that if we’re to save ourselves.”
The large screen blasted light intense enough to turn the room into a light shade of grey and displayed several icons that left AJ befuddled to its meaning. Kathy understood each one and immediately clicked on a folder which held files describing the studies of Peter. One was opened and read:

May 5th, 2042.

There’s not a lot I can say here, not from what I have discovered. The world around us isn’t what it seems. There are things I cannot explain, but ever since I have accessed the network I have began to see strange signs on everything. The room around me seems to be made out of codes, as if I’m in a virtual realm.  I go outside and see the same thing, it’s a scary thought that my research has led me to believe that I am living in a digitalized world, one that can be and probably has been manipulated in the way the organization sees fit.

The Organization is “deleting” people as they say, which further continues my belief…and I feel I might be the next to go. This is all too vital, this information is too great to be in the wrong hands, but if I were to find the one that could fix all of this there would be no worry for humanities survival. I’ve said all of this too many times to the Interweb Reformery; my group that is planning to take over The Organization.

I need to find the one person able to carry on our plan. I may be at a loss of hope.

AJ’s and Kathy’s minds reeled in utter confusion. They couldn’t interpret the possibility of them living in a digital world.
“My goodness…what if what he said is true?” AJ said still in shock.
“If it is, everything about this world that we knew was false.” Kathy said, swallowing the lump that formed in her throat. “That also means we…both of us are just floating point calculations. Data swimming around a virtual realm that we can’t control.”
The couple’s view of their life and the world around them changed drastically at that moment. A realization that they had no idea who they really were. Kathy closed the file and tried to search for more information concerning the discovery the boy wrote about. A audible thump on the ground behind them startled the two and as they turned around a man in a black and grey armored suit launched himself toward AJ.

He dodged the swinging fist that was aimed for his face, stepping back with enough clearance to allow one of his own fists to connect with the side of the man’s head. The man jumped away and ran back to AJ then kicked him in the abdomen. Kathy watched in terror as AJ kneeled on the ground clenching his sides. He managed to get back up and formed two firm fists ready to defend himself with his might. The man rushed toward AJ again, but this time AJ pivoted his body to dodge, granting enough clearance to grab the arm and break it with his knee. The man stumbled backward and held his arm steady to prevent the bone from protruding from the skin any farther.
“Bastard!!” The man yelled loudly in pain.
Kathy’s face flushed with irritation.
“Who the hell are you?” AJ demanded.
The man mustered the strength to stand up and face AJ a few feet away from him. “My identity is not necessary for this time. Not ever. You do not need to know when the gathered knowledge will only be a waste of my breath when you’ll be dead soon!”
“We know who you work for, that may be enough.”
“There are far more things that you will never learn, no matter how much you try.” The man said with a glare directed toward Kathy.
“What is it that you want?” She asked. “There has to be something that you you’re fighting for.”
The man shook his head and chuckled. “Fighters. You two are not what we usually contend with. My leader will find great use in your determination. My name is Hal73, an agent for The Organization. They are multidimensional, all knowing, and invisible, they cannot be stopped, and they cannot be eradicated. You on the other hand, are.” The man said as he walked in circles around the room, switching attention between AJ and Kathy. “We only want one thing; a perfect world with no strife, no death, no poverty. No crime or abuse, a world that should have been. We are happy, no? It’s been going on for decades and this so called ‘Interweb Reformery’ desires to take control to shape the world back to it’s original tainted form, back to it’s insufferable and inconsistent way of life.”

AJ and Kathy reflected on the spoken words of Hal. They felt sinister and dark while maintaining a sense of truth and sincerity. To believe those words put them in a position of having to choose between helping or fighting against one or the other, two sides that could lead to any outcome and they didn’t know which one was truly against humanity.
The confusion was overwhelming and AJ began to devise an intricate plan to halt the progress of both wars, taking Kathy to a corner of the room for a more private chat.
“I have an idea, and you need to trust me baby.”
“Okay.” Kathy said in a more concerned tone of voice than usual. She could anticipate what was running in AJ’s mind and assumed the worst. “What is it?”
“What if one of us…were to join a side. As a team, both of us working inside the two sides.” AJ said. He thought perhaps his girlfriend would serve a better purpose inside of the Citadel, her knowledge of the systems were profound and she agreed. AJ figured he could stay behind and search for others who had direct relation to Peter since his father was a correctional officer who had access to civilian records.
Kathy looked back to see Hal with his back toward them, ripping a part of his suit off to create a bandage for his arm. “But how would we still remain in contact while keeping this plan secret?”
“That’s what we’ll figure out. For now play along.” AJ said with forethought, then proceeded to throw his hands in the air shouting false statements of their relationship with a wink of an eye.
“You never want me around anyway, all we ever do is have sex.” Kathy said jokingly, but with a pure act of seriousness.
“Oh is that how you feel? All I ever want is to use you for my pleasures? Please.”
“Fine! You fail to understand my point of view, every single time we get into these arguments you go off about me, me, me–I’m done!”
AJ scoffed. “Done? Who else do you have to go to?” AJ said as he nudged toward the confused and spectating Hal.
Kathy walked up to the man and stood beside him. “I’ve found my place with people who don’t want conflict, who wish of a better life.”
Hal nodded in accordance to Kathy’s plea. “I’m glad one of you came to their senses. It seems this war may be over as we speak.”  Hal was convinced by the couples facade and wrapped his unbroken arm around Kathy’s waist. “Gatherer-ninty-four, request for teleport.”
In an instant Hal and Kathy disappeared in a flash of light and dancing codes, leaving AJ alone in the dimly lit enclosure.
“It’s over when I say so.”

Time for Virtual Party Hats V5; One Lovely Blog Nomination!

Here we are once again to celebrate the greatest moments of my blog’s history; looking back at all the tears, blood, sweet, and Bengay used to craft such a blog of incredulousness. This time the party welcomes the news of its second award from another blog, My Two Caps. The blog carries a lot of great posts pertaining to the vast realm of virtual reality and the geekhood we so proudly engage in.
I sincerely thank you for such an honor and since the nomination was granted due to the earlier posts I made about gaming, Better With A Pen shall continue on with the game related news, reviews, and sneak peeks. The news shall also continue on the brother site Gaming The Systems, so don’t fret my dears.

One Lovely Blog Award

In part of accepting such award there are some rules that follow:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to them in your post.
  • Share 7 things about yourself. (Keep in mind that children may read this)
  • Nominate 15 bloggers you absolutely relish.
  • Leave a comment on each of these blogs letting them know they’ve been nominated.

So now that the rules are acknowledged, I must acknowledge them myself. 7 little known facts:

  1. I have written an entire novel in my youth, deciding that it would serve a greater purpose as kindling than a readable piece of material.
  2. I’m very outspoken and I don’t let anything stop me from speaking my mind, which gives others the impression that I am an insensitive pompous jerk.
  3. I like to reenact Brian Regan’s standup routines, having the uncanny ability to replicate his voice. (As much as someone doesn’t like it…)
  4. I have never been able to successfully write a poem, as each 15-word heartfelt letter becomes a 15-page heartfelt letter.
  5. I dress like a hipster, but remain classy and suave.
  6. I’m crazily, insanely in love with someone right now, so I thought I should tell the world.
  7. I still enjoy drawing my StickMan Adventures comic series I began in my year at Puerto Rico. It now happens to be on it’s 10th season.

Now here are the 15 blogs that I would like to nominate for this meritorious award:

So, go on to check these great blogs out. Maybe even read a bit. It’s healthy.
Let the party commence!
